Persistence in high temperature | Busy lotus picking in a thousand acres of lotus fields in high temperature and hot summer.
CCTV News:This period of time coincides with the hot weather in the south, which is also the most suitable season for lotus growth in a year. In Xiangtan, Hunan Province, lotus pickers started the busiest time of the year in the heat and summer.
At 7 o’clock in the morning, the outdoor temperature has reached 32℃. This is the golden time for picking lotus. The lotus pickers put on rain pants and got into the lotus field with a height of more than one person. On the lotus field, the breeze is swaying the lotus leaf, but under the lotus leaf, it is completely airtight. The lotus pickers got into the lotus leaves as if they had entered a steamer. One person and one boat, they marched slowly in the lotus pond, tearing open the lotus leaf stalks densely covered with fields, and the lotus leaves with full grains bent came into view. The lotus pickers picked the lotus leaves and lotus stalks together.
Huang Fei, a lotus picker in Zhuojiang Village, Xiangtan County, Hunan Province:It will be preserved for a long time if there are (lotus) stalks. The key is that it can’t (pick the lotus) when it rains. The main reason for the rain is that the lotus seeds are broken. If you don’t wear long clothes and long sleeves, this lotus stalk will scratch people and make your hands burn like fire.
In the Xianglian Characteristic Industrial Park in Huashi Town, Xiangtan County, nearly 3,000 acres of lotus fields have also produced the first lotus seeds this year. At present, more than 30 nearby villagers pick lotus here every day, which can harvest more than 1000 kilograms of lotus. The villagers said that when there are the most people, more than 80 people will come here to pick, and they can pick tens of thousands of kilograms every day.
Liu Lizhi, a lotus picker in Zhonghua Village, Huashi Town, Xiangtan County, Hunan Province:A basket is about twenty-seven or eight pounds, because if it is too heavy, people will have deep mud in the field, which will be very hard to bear on people’s bodies (too much), so it is better for people to preserve their physical strength when walking. Generally, there are twelve or thirteen baskets a day. In the middle period, when there are many lotus seeds, one person can pick fifteen or sixteen baskets.
Every morning from 4 am to 9 am and from 3 pm to 7 pm are the busiest times for lotus pickers. These two periods are the times when lotus seeds have the most moisture and the best taste in a day. Under normal circumstances, the lotus began to mature in May of the lunar calendar and lasted until the end of August 15th of the lunar calendar.
